Life style

These articles are condensed, mobile-friendly versions of pieces originally written for my sister site, Hooked-on. If anything catches your interest, I hope you'll visit Hooked-on as well.

The images on this site are formatted in a tall portrait orientation for mobile. On a desktop screen they'll appear quite large. If that's not to your preference, the original versions are on Hooked-on.

This site, Interest, rebuilds the Hooked-on articles — originally written on WordPress — using Drupal, and takes advantage of Drupal's features to enable reverse-lookup navigation and browsing by article relationships. My hope is that visitors leave with their sense of interest — their curiosity — a little more expanded.

My approach to fashion leans toward pieces I can form a genuine attachment to — things built to last, where you can sense the intelligence and craft of the maker. I write from the perspective of how a man dresses, and dig into what fits my own sensibility and what I find to be genuinely universal.

These aren't articles written to sell anything. I started writing because there was almost no information online about how someone who actually owns a piece enjoys it. Everything here is written from a deeply personal point of view.

Levi’s 502 60’s Model

A Levi's 502 from the late 1960s — a zip-fly model produced for just three years — with heavy fading and multiple repairs that make it a pair I can wash and wear through summer without a second thought. The zip fly is easier to live with than buttons, and the length works perfectly with both sneakers and sandals.

Field Jacket Brunello Cucinelli

A Brunello Cucinelli field jacket — a military piece that earns its place in spring and summer. The construction is quietly accomplished: unlined tailoring that keeps it light and cool even in warmer months, with a masculinity to it that somehow reads as thoroughly refined. It has become one of the pieces I reach for most.

Wasew Crew neck T-shirt

In summer, when blue jeans dominate my wardrobe, I find myself reaching for a white T-shirt more than anything else. After searching for a genuinely good one — something that would stand up over time — I found what I was looking for in the Wasew crew neck T-shirt, made in Okayama.

Leica SL2-S

All photographs on this site are taken with the Leica SL2-S. At 24 megapixels the resolution is modest, but it is more than sufficient for web use — and the professional-grade image engine, excellent high-ISO performance, robust build, and manageable file sizes make it an exceptionally practical camera to work with.

C Diem

About twenty years ago, C Diem was a brand I was so taken with that it was what I wore on days off — almost to the exclusion of everything else. Eventually I passed those pieces on to the junior colleague mentioned in the Berluti article. This is the story of C Diem.

LACOSTE Slim Fit Polo Shirts

The Lacoste polo shirt is so much a classic that almost everyone has worn one at some point. A genuinely versatile piece that works with almost any style while still looking refined — and the collar means it holds its own as a single layer, making it one of the most useful tops in the summer wardrobe.

Levi’s 501XX 1954

The Levi's 501 has a long history and an established vintage secondary market, with examples ranging from the 19th century to the present. This article introduces the 501XX — the model that collectors most often identify as the definitive 501, and the one I love most.

CIOTA

Japanese manufacturing is extraordinary — high quality is a given, and that standard carries through to clothing that takes vintage as its reference. The CIOTA jeans introduced here draw on the 66-series Levi's 501 as their model.

US ARMY M43 HBT Field Jacket

I have a fondness for US military clothing — the unlined M43 for spring and summer, the lined M65 for autumn and winter. This article covers the M43, which sees the most use in the warmer months. Made from cotton herringbone twill, it develops a distinctive character with age and pairs exceptionally well with vintage jeans and summer shorts.

Levi’s 501XX 1955

The 1955 Model is the paper patch era 501XX — the last model to carry the 501XX name. Identified by the off-centre centre belt loop, Big E double-sided tab, and copper-plated rivets.
