Camera Onuki

My film cameras come from Camera Onuki in Yokohama — a shop with over eighty years of history in the city, dealing in cameras and photography since the era of the Leica Model A. The selection covers the full range: Leica, Rolleiflex, Hasselblad, Zeiss, Canon, Nikon, Mamiya, Pentax — each brand arranged neatly in its own display case, and genuinely worth browsing even without a specific purchase in mind.

Classic cameras, imported pieces, domestic vintage, lesser-known manufacturers — all properly displayed and easy to take in. Because they have been specialising in cameras for so long, accessories and parts are well stocked. When I bought my second-generation Summilux 35mm here, they had the original hood and the matching drop-in filter — the kind of period-correct accessories that are genuinely difficult to find anywhere else.

The staff photograph seriously and know their equipment well. Their advice on what to buy and how to use it is sound, and it's a shop where you can ask questions with confidence. They carry a good range of film, and can connect you with skilled developers and printers — so if you want to shoot film but aren't ready to develop yourself, they have that covered too.

Older cameras inevitably raise questions about maintenance and repair. Camera Onuki handles both properly: overhauls, servicing, and warranty are all taken seriously. I've had my M3 overhauled here, my Rolleiflex overhauled, and the lens shutter on my Hasselblad adjusted — all done to a standard I trust completely.

My Leica M3, M4, and Hasselblad all came from Camera Onuki. I've also bought lenses and a Rolleiflex here, among other things — too many to list in full. Every camera sold here is properly serviced for actual use.

Even pieces with collector value are set up to shoot — they are cameras to use as well as to own. Classic cameras are entirely mechanical precision instruments, and in that sense they share something with mechanical watches: the kind of object that appeals to people who appreciate things made to last. Knowing the condition of a piece, and handling it appropriately, is harder than it sounds — and it's not always done well. Camera Onuki, as a shop with the history and expertise they have, gets it right. Every camera on the shelf is ready to use.

Leica M3

An introduction to the Leica M3. In an age when smartphones let you take as many photographs as you like, there's something compelling about shooting on film — where exposure and focus are entirely manual, and each frame is made with care.
