In the previous article, we introduced the New Balance 1700 series, and this time we will be introducing the 991 series.
While the 1700 series is an extension of the traditional New Balance design, the design of the 991 series, which we will be introducing this time, has a somewhat modern feel to it. Let's talk about the 991 series.
Originally, I was a big fan of New Balance sneakers from the 998 series, and I had three pairs of grey 998s that I loved so much I wore them to the point of wearing them out. When the three pairs of 998s I had got worn out, I thought it was time to buy some new ones, so I looked at the New Balance website, but the 998s had been discontinued.
The model that came up as a candidate at that time was the 991 series, which was selling the UK model. I immediately went to the New Balance Roppongi store to check out the actual product, and since they had stock of my size, I asked to try them on. The specialist fitter helped me choose the size and fitted them, and I tried them on and walked around a bit to check the feel, but they were very good, so I bought the 991 grey for the first time here.
Once I had a good feel for them, I decided to buy a spare pair as well, and the pair I bought is the 991s with yellow uppers that I'm introducing here. Yellow goes well with navy, and it's a good combination for me, who mainly wears jeans, but when you look for yellow sneakers, there are surprisingly few of them, and until now I'd never bought a pair
I actually wanted to try them on in a shop before buying them, but as I bought them in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, I was worried about the shops cutting their opening hours due to the coronavirus, and I didn't want to go out of my way to go to an area with lots of people, so I bought them on the official New Balance website this time, as I knew the size of the 991 in grey.
When the actual shoes arrived and I tried them on, I found that the 991s were a yellow colour that was quite different from the grey I had imagined, and I liked them so much that I ended up wearing them with dark-coloured jeans most of the time.
The suede part is yellow, so it looks different from the grey version.
- Pigskin suede/mesh combination upper material
- Rubber sole
- Visible ABZORB
- Good breathability thanks to the mesh upper
- Comfortable to walk in thanks to the sole material and shape developed through research
- Sneaker-like design based on functionality
- Classic design that has remained unchanged for many years, despite being a little modern
- Exquisite colour scheme that seems unlikely to exist
- We're talking about 1700 articles, but the excellent cushioning feels a little strange when used with shoes that have thin, hard soles. No problem once you get used to it.
As I wrote in my article 1700, the New Balance 900 series was originally made for running, but its functional beauty has been sublimated into fashion, and many people enjoy them as fashion items.
I wrote that the excellent cushioning would feel strange in special applications where cushioning is not needed, but for most people this is completely irrelevant, so they are extremely good sneakers with no weaknesses. Also, the yellow 991 colour goes really well with dark-coloured jeans, and I'm very satisfied with these sneakers, which I use frequently and find very easy to use.
NEW BALANCE Official Website
This time, I bought the 991 from the New Balance official store because of the timing of my purchase.
As the coronavirus situation is starting to improve and social activities are returning to pre-coronavirus levels, if you have the chance, I think you can make a satisfying purchase by visiting the official store and having a specialist fitter choose a pair that suits your feet
